The flow through system is a non-backwashing unit with some significant advantages. There is no wasted water and no use of energy. It is therefore an entirely green system. It is less expensive than most whole house filters and requires little or no maintenance during its lifetime. When the medium is exhausted you simply purchase a refill kit and replace the old material with the new. The old material is completely recyclable. The backwashing system requires a small amount of electricity to run a timer clock and does flush water to the drain during backwash. While not as green a product as its flow through cousin it does offer the advantages of longer life and higher flow rates. It refills in the same manner as the flow through model and the replaced material is completely recyclable.
