How To Select a “Wide Spectrum” or “Wide SpectrumChloramine”?

The ideal version to select, "Wide Spectrum" vs. "Wide Spectrum+ Chloramine", is based on the type of chemical(s) that are used to treat your city water supply.

Approximately 85% of city water systems are treated with the traditional Chlorine disinfectant, the remaining 15% of city water systems are treated with an alternative disinfectant chemical called Chloramine.

Select "Wide Spectrum" if your water supply is treated with the traditional Chlorine disinfectant.

Select "Wide Spectrum+ Chloramine" if your water supply is treated with the alternative Chloramine disinfectant.

Instructions regarding how to locate your local water department's water quality data to identify if your water is treated with Chlorine or Chloramine can be located by scrolling further below.

How To Identify if Your Water Is Treated wChlorine or Chloramine?

Option #1:

  • Ask CuZn to check on your behalf. CuZn's water experts will use your zip code to locate your municipal water system's water quality data and recommend the best set up for your home
  • Email sales@CuZn.com, live chat now or call 800.345.PURE (7873), provide your zip code & request a whole house system recommendation

Option #2:

  • DIY research your local water quality report
  • If you prefer to research yourself, visit the website of your local water department / municipal water provider and review their "Annual Water Quality Report" test data (also called Consumer Confidence Report in some cases).
  • When the alternative Chloramine disinfectant is used instead of the traditional Chlorine, they’ll list the disinfectant on the report as “Chloramines”, “MonoChloramine”, “Total Chlorine” or “Combined Chlorine”. If you can’t find the information regarding whether Chlorine or Chloramine is added to the water as a disinfectant, you can give the Municipal Water Department a call to confirm or contact CuZn for assistance and we'll confirm it with them on your behalf.
  • Our Wide Spectrum+ Chloramine Models will remove both Chlorine & Chloramine if you would prefer to skip the research. However, the Wide Spectrum+ Chloramine Models and corresponding refills do tend to be bit higher in price and the added cost isn’t necessary if your water is treated with the traditional Chlorine disinfectant.

Filtration Process:

About CuZn’s Patented Media Filtration Processes:

Stage 1 – Pre-Sediment Filtration (micro insoluble particulate removal):

Both CuZn’s “Wide Spectrum” and “Wide Spectrum+ Chloramine” model whole house water filters always come with a pre-sediment filter. The pre-sediment filter system contains a micro sediment filter cartridge inside. As water enters the whole house water treatment system, the water will first flow through the pre-sediment filter’s micro sediment cartridge which removes any microscopic physical, insoluble particles out of the water prior to the water flowing through the main filter tank.

Even though most city water supplies run clear to the naked eye, you will be shocked and amazed by how much insoluble microscopic dirt & grime is captured by the micro sediment filter cartridge. The pre-sediment filter system protects the main filter tank from getting clogged or fouled by insoluble particulate.

Contrary to what many believe, only a small portion of water filtration involves removing microscopic insoluble particulate from the water. The vast majority of contaminants such as heavy metals, chlorine, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, disinfection by products, odors, tastes, etc…….are in fact water soluble contaminants that are dissolved into the water and can’t be removed by using a micro particulate removal filter cartridge that works similar to a screen of strainer. The removal of these water soluble contaminants is done by the cutting edge water filtration media loaded into the main tank filter.

The cutting edge water filtration media inside the main tank works by adsorption, pulling the water soluble (liquidized) chemicals and other contaminants out of the water permanently into itself like a sponge.

Stage 2 – Inside the Main Filter Tank:

CuZn’s Proprietary Reticulated KDF Filter Media Stage is a remarkable REDOX media (oxidation/reduction), representing a new and unique natural process of electrochemical oxidation/reduction and adsorption action. KDF targets the dissolved inorganic contaminants (up to 98% of soluble cation heavy metals including mercury, lead, chromium, cadmium, etc.).

Powerful KDF redox media produces an ORP Shift of -300mV or more, creating bacteriostatic environment that prevents the growth of bacteria, mold & other microbial contaminants.

The KDF redox media reaction also eliminates corrosive properties of the water and prevents corrosion of pipes and appliances.

KDF redox media also helps reduces the accumulation of calcium/magnesium scale formation by transforming calcium mineral content to aragonite form that does not adhere to plumbing & appliances. The KDF redox media of the whole house filter’s hard water conditioning capabilities are sufficient for up to 8 grains per gallon of total hardness.

If your water is above 8 grains per gallon or is considered “hard” water, we’d recommend that you add the “Salt-Free Hard Water Conditioner” tank to your whole house system order. Scroll further below to learn more about salt-free softening and the “Salt-Free Hard Water Conditioner” tank optional upgrade.

The average total hardness level is a water quality measurement that is used to determine if water is considered “soft” water or “hard” water and is a measurement of the water’s concentration of calcium and magnesium mineral content. The average levels of total hardness in city water systems in the USA is only 5 grains per gallon, which means the vast majority of folks do not need to add the “Salt-Free Hard Water Conditioner” tank optional upgrade to their whole house system order.

Stage 3 – Inside the Main Filter Tank

Catalytic Coconut Shell Carbon is an adsorbent media that target the volatile organic compounds (chlorine, THMs, disinfection by products, herbicides, pesticides, etc). Coconut shell carbon has dramatically higher porosity than alternative sources of activated carbon and is the most effective form of activated carbon for water treatment applications. CuZn’s Catalytic Carbons have long been recognized as the gold standard in the industry and dramatically outperform the cheap standard coconut shell carbons used by all of CuZn’s competitors in all performance aspects.

What is the Salt-Free Softening / Hard Water Conditioner? How do I know if I need one?:

Salt Free Water Softening & Scale prevention!

The average level of total hardness in city water supplies here in the USA is only 5 grains per gallon and the Whole House Water Filters will sufficiently handle up to 8 grains per gallon without the “Salt-Free Hard Water Conditioner” tank. Since the average total hardness in City Water is only 5 grains per gallon, the vast majority of customers do not need to add the “Salt-Free Hard Water Conditioner” tank optional upgrade to their whole house water filter system order.

However, if you are among the minority of folks with city water that is above 8 grains total hardness (8 Grains = 137 mg/l or 137 ppm total hardness) and you are experiencing issues with calcium/lime hard water mineral residue build up on plumbing fixtures (white/tank/light-colored mineral residue on glasses, tea kettles, glass shower walls, sink spouts etc.)…..we’d recommend that you consider adding the “Salt-Free Hard Water Conditioner” tank optional upgrade to your whole house water filter system order.

The level of Hardness Minerals (total hardness = concentration of calcium & magnesium minerals in the water) is used to determine if your water is “Soft Water” or “Hard Water”. While calcium and magnesium are of course health beneficial minerals to ingest, water that contains an extremely high concentration of water soluble calcium and magnesium minerals it is called “Hard Water”. When the water is excessively hard (high total hardness level) aesthetic issues like hard mineral scale or lime scale deposits (hard light colored mineral build up on shower glass, dishes in the dishwater, sink fixtures, etc…) occur too frequently and can be aggravating.

Unlike traditional salt based water softeners, CuZn’s Salt Free Systems won’t make your water feel slimy, have hair flattening effects, remove the beneficial calcium/magnesium hardness minerals or add salt to your water. CuZn’s “Salt-Free Hard Water Conditioner” tank is available as an optional upgrade for folks experiencing hard water issues, utilizing Template Assisted Crystallization Media that reduces the aggravating aesthetic issues associated with hard water and is an optional upgrade to your whole house water filter system that we recommend for homeowners with with high levels of hardness.

CuZn’s Template Assisted Crystallization Media (TAC) is capable of conditioning very high levels of total hardness up to 20 grains per gallon (342 mg/l or ppm). CuZn’s TAC salt-free softening technology is the only alternative to traditional salt based water softening technology that has been scientifically proven to work by an independant study. Click here to view an independent study by Arizona State University that compares various alternatives to salt based softening and you will see that CuZn’s Template Assisted Crystallization is the only effective alternative to salt based water softening.

Our technologically advanced salt free anti-scale medias are an innovative solution that prevents all of the negative effects of calcium and magnesium, while allowing the health beneficial calcium and magnesium minerals to remain in the conditioned water for drinking & cooking. Within a water system, calcium and magnesium can adhere to plumbing and water appliances by forming crystalline scale structures. Untreated, these minerals become hard, interfere with heat transfer and eventually cause loss of water flow and pressure. Untreated hardness can increase your home’s energy bill up to 20%!

Scale Transformation

*In some cases harsh detergents, high in chlorine/bleach or phosphates can cause mineral like deposits to form on dishes. To avoid this issue use Jet Dry or similar product, reduce the amount of harsh detergent used or best of all – Use an Eco Friendly brand

How often to replace pre-filter cartridges? Main tank?:

Pre-Sediment Filter Cartridge Replacement:

Main Tank Filter Replacement Based on Time:

  • “Wide Spectrum” Models
    • Replace main tank once every 5 years
    • If replacement is required prior to reaching the full 5 years of life for any reason, CuZn will provide warranty replacement
  • “Chloramine+ Wide Spectrum Models”
    • Replace main tank once every 3 years
    • If replacement is required prior to reaching the full 3 years of life for any reason, CuZn will provide warranty replacement

Main Tank Filter Replacement Based On Usage / Gallons Used:

  • “Wide Spectrum” models:
    • To test the “Wide Spectrum” models performance, utilize DPD#1 free chlorine type chlorine test strips and replace when chlorine breakthrough is detected in the filtered water.
    • It is worthless to track gallons, since everybody’s water is different and water quality also varies throughout the year, the “real world” gallon capacity for a whole house water filter will simply be different from house to house.
    • Testing the water every month or two give you realtime feedback if the filter is working or not and is far more accurate method than tracking the number of gallons used.
    • A pack of Chlorine Test Strips will be included with each purchase and we are happy to ship out more for free upon request if you need them, just email, live chat, call, etc….and we’ll drop some more in the mail for you at no additional cost.
    • Chlorine is usually always present at high levels (1-3ppm) and is easy to test for at home. The Chlorine Test Strips we provide will detect as little as 0.25ppm breakthrough. When the system is performing optimally, the test strips should show negative chlorine results. When the test strips show positive 0.25ppm, that doesn’t mean the filter has stopped working (reducing 2ppm down to 0.25pm is still around 90% reduction) but it does mean that the filters performance is beginning to decline and that you should consider replacing your main tank with a fresh one.
    • If chlorine breakthrough occurs prior to reaching the full 5 year life, that is covered under the systems’ comprehensive 5 year performance warranty. In the unlikely event premature expiration occurs; call, email or live chat and we’ll get you set up with a warranty replacement.
  • “Wide Spectrum+ Chloramine ” models:
    • To test the ” performance, utilize DPD#1 free chlorine type chlorine test strips and replace when chlorine breakthrough is detected in the filtered water.
    • It is worthless to track gallons, since everybody’s water is different and water quality also varies throughout the year, the “real world” gallon capacity for a whole house water filter will simply be different from house to house.
    • Testing the water every 6 months or so gives you realtime feedback if the filter is still working optimally is a far more accurate method than tracking the number of gallons used.
    • A pack of Total Chlorine Test Strips for Chloramine Breakthrough will be included with each purchase and we are happy to ship out more for free upon request if you need them, just email, live chat, call, etc….and we’ll drop some more in the mail for you at no additional cost.
    • Chloramine is usually always present at high levels (1-3ppm) and is easy to test for at home. The Chloramine Test Strips we provide will detect as little as 0.25ppm breakthrough. When the system is performing optimally, the test strips should show negative Chloramine results. When the test strips show positive 0.25ppm, that doesn’t mean the filter has stopped working (reducing 2ppm down to 0.25pm is still around 90% reduction) but it does mean that the filters performance is beginning to decline and that you should consider replacing your main tank with a fresh one.
    • If chloramine breakthrough occurs prior to reaching the full 3 year life, that is covered under the systems’ comprehensive 3 year performance warranty. In the unlikely event premature expiration occurs; call, email or live chat and we’ll get you set up with a warranty replacement.
